Ex-President Obasanjo Backs Sale Of National Assets

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday threw his backings on the proposed sale of national assets but said the problem was in the coinage.

Obasanjo said this in Abeokuta at the opening ceremony of the National Council On Finance and Economic Development Conference (NACOFED).
The theme of the conference is “Enhancing Revenue Generation and Obtaining Best Value for Money in Expenditure”.
According to Obasanjo, “We must begin to do away with things that we can do without and if we must import them, let them attract very high duties,” he said.

Obasanjo who backed the call for the sale of some national assets to raise money, described such act as natural.

The former president said port authorities and Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) were part of assets that Nigeria could partly sell to generate fund.

“I do not see why 49 per cent of NNPC cannot be privatised. “I think the problem is in the coinage “selling of asset” as if we want to throw out our inheritance. “What we are actually doing by that is simply re-organising.

“It should however be done transparently and let it actually go public and not to cabals, relations and friends.

“This is always the fear of Nigerians when issues like this arise,” he said.

Obasanjo expressed confidence in the ability of the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, saying that ” she is doing a marvelous job in a difficult situation and that only time can prove her right”.

Edo Election: Convicted Terrorist On Fake Voters Register, Says Oshiomhole

Ahead today’s governorship election Governor Adams Oshiomhole has alerted the public to the existence of a fake voters’ register in the state, which has the portrait of a convicted terrorist, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, popularly referred to as the “Underwear Bomber.”

Receiving the United States Consul General in Lagos, Mr. F John Bray, Oshiomhole said he was shocked to see the portrait of the “underwear bomber” in the fake register, but with a Benin name. Abdulmutallab was convicted of attempting to detonate explosives hidden in his underwear on board an airline from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan, on December 25, 2009.

Governor Oshiomhole, who raised concern about the duplication of the voter’s register by INEC said “the foundation for credible election is the voters register. Once the register is manipulated, then you have problems.

Supreme Court Suspends Hearing Of Appeal Against Gov. Ikpeazu

The Supreme Court on Tuesday temporarily suspended the hearing of appeals against the election of Okezie Ikpeazu as Governor of Abia pending harmonisation of processes by the parties.
Justice Tanko Mohammed-led six other justices of the apex court to arrive at the decision.

Three motions brought by Dr Uche Ogah of PDP, All Progressives Grand Alliance and Alex Oti, were heard and decided.

Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), Dr Alex Izinyon (SAN) and Chief Patrick Ikwueto (SAN) represented the governor, Ogah and Oti respectively.

On Oti’s motion for joinder, Mohammed held that the court required proper addresses to be filed by parties since the application had become contentious.

“In the light of this, we would not be going on with the hearing of the substantive appeals.

“The Counsel to Oti is given four days to file his written address to convince the court why his client should be joined in the matter.

“The respondents counsel are given seven days to file their replies while the applicant’s counsel is given another extra two days to file his replies to the respondents’ arguments,’’ he said.

Mohammed also held that a new hearing date would be communicated to the parties when all the processes were received by the court.

Trump Vows To Hit Clinton Harder In Next US Presidential Debate

Republican Donald Trump has vowed to hit rival Democrat Hillary Clinton harder in the next US presidential debate after she put him on the defensive by accusing him of being racist, sexist and a tax dodger during their first matchup.

Mr Trump, making his first run for public office, praised himself for not attacking Mrs Clinton about the marital infidelity of her husband, former president Bill Clinton, during the debate at Hofstra University.

But he said in a morning interview with Fox News he may take up the attack line going forward.

"I may hit her harder in certain ways," Mr Trump said. He added that when Mrs Clinton criticised him for his treatment of women, he resisted.

"I was going to hit her with her husband's women. And I decided I shouldn't do it because her daughter was in the room," he said. Mrs Clinton brushed off Mr Trump's promise, saying: "He can run his campaign however he chooses."

Court To Rule On Jonathan's Wife's $15.5m October 7

A former Special Adviser on Domestic Affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Waripamo Dudafa, yesterday urged the Federal High Court in Lagos to nullify the guilty plea by four companies linked to Jonathan’s wife, Patience.

The companies on September 15 pleaded guilty to laundering $15,591,700 (about N5billion) when they were arraigned.
They are: Pluto Property and Investment Company Ltd (represented by Friday Davis), Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Ltd (represented by Agbor Baro), Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Ltd (represented by Dioghowori Frederick) and Avalon Global Property Development Ltd (represented by Taiwo Ebenezer).

The companies, along with a lawyer Amajuoyi Briggs and a banker, Adedamola Bolodeoku, were arraigned before Justice Babs Kuewumi. Dudafa, Briggs and Bolodeoku, however, pleaded not guilty to a 17-count charge brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Yesterday, Dudafa and Briggs, through their lawyers, urged the court to set aside the guilty plea entered on the firm’ behalf by their representatives.
They urged the court to replace the guilty plea and with a “not-guilty” plea for the companies. They also contended that the court lacked jurisdiction to accept the companies’ guilty plea. The defendants said those who pleaded guilty for the companies did not exhibit any letter authorising them to do so by the firms’ board.

They argued that the prosecution failed to comply with Section 477(3) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 which specifies that such a representative must have authorisation.
Dudafa’s lawyer, Gbenga Oyewole, said the four representatives had earlier made statements to both the EFCC and the court denying any connection with the companies and alleging that their names and signatures were forged.

Besides, he said Mrs Jonathan had sued EFCC claiming ownership of the funds in the companies’ accounts, adding that neither the Federal Government not any state had stated that the funds were stolen from them.
According to him, the same representatives had earlier denied any link to the companies when they were first charged before Justice Abdulazeez Anka, who sat during the vacation. He said Justice Anka replaced their guilty plea with “not guilty” after their denial.

“The purported representatives did not produce a statement of appointment by the companies,” Oyewole argued.
But, EFCC’s lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, urged the court to refuse the applications.
He said there was evidence at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) that Davies, Baro, Fredrick and Ebenezer were the companies’ directors.
Oyedepo said the four also had the mandate to operate the Skye Bank accounts where the $15.5million is.

Besides, he said the companies representatives were of sound mind and made a deliberate decision to plead guilty.
“The prima facie evidence before Your Lordship is that those who appeared before Your Lordship are the directors of the fourth to seventh defendants (the companies). EFCC said the accused persons conspired on November 13, 2013 in Lagos to launder $15,591,700.
It said the defendants “reasonably ought to have known that the funds form part of the proceeds of an unlawful act”.

Seagate Property, Dudafa, Bolodeoku and Sompre Omiebi (said to be at large) were accused of indirectly retaining $1,094,500 through a Skye Bank Plc account (2110002207) between November 14 and 19, 2013. EFCC said the money “forms part of an unlawful act to wit: stealing.”

They were also accused of indirectly retaining $1,200,000 through the Skye Bank account between January 21 and December 19, 2014; as well as $1,349,700 through the same account between March 31 and May 20, 2015, among others.
Justice Kuewunmi adjourned until October 7 for ruling.

World's First 'Three-Parent Baby' Concieved Using IVF Technique Is Born

The world's first child has been born using a revolutionary technique that combines the genes of three parents.

Like all humans, the five-month-old boy carries DNA from both his parents. But he also has a tiny piece of genetic code from a donor.

It means he has avoided inheriting a genetic condition from his Jordanian mother, known only as IS, that could kill him. The controversial technique has only been legally approved in the UK.

However, the first baby was engineered by a US medical team who treated IS and her husband in Mexico, where there are no laws to block the procedure.

And embryologists believe this birth should fast-forward progress around the world, offering hope to millions who face the prospect of delivering terminally ill children.

'This is a milestone technique,' Dr John Zhang, who led the medical team from New York City's New Hope Fertility Center, told Daily Mail Online.

'It proves for the first time that genetic information from three people can avoid disease,' he said.

'We now know reconstitution of human eggs can produce a healthy baby.

'No other technique has been established.'

A bogus lifestyle guru who stole more than £130,000 from Premier League footballers , a top manager and two millionaire businessmen was jailed for three years and eight months.

Claire Liddle, 41, conned wealthy clients including Stoke City frontman Peter Odemwingie , Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom and former Celtic boss Tony Mowbray by offering to organise their luxury holidays.

She was originally spared jail after admitting the £82,000 scam in 2014 but went on to steal another £22,000 from the chairman of telecommunications giant Lebara and £33,000 from the boss of sales solutions firm Flixmedia.

Liddle "frittered away" the money on presents for herself including alcohol and a Rolex watch, the Old Bailey heard.

She wept as she was sentenced to 12 months for the first fraud on the footballers, and 16 months consecutive on each of the other two scams, making a total of 44 months.

Mary J. Blige Asks Judge To Rule Prenup With Estranged Husband Is Valid

Singer Mary J. Blige is determined to make her estranged husband abide by a prenuptial agreement she insists is solid.

The 45-year-old filed for divorce from Martin 'Kendu' Isaacs in July citing irreconcilable differences after 12 years of marriage.

Now, according to TMZ, she's asking a judge to rule that the prenup that sets out what each takes away from the marriage is valid.

The gossip website reports that Blige is concerned that an attorney for Isaacs, who is also her manager, has apparently suggested that the agreement is 'immensely invalid, unenforceable and unconscionable.'

The R&B star claims that the couple signed their agreement on December 5, 2003, two days before they wed.

In her divorce filing, she also asked the judge not to grant Isaacs any spousal support.

England Manager Sam Allardyce Loses Job After Just One Game In Charge

Sam Allardyce, who had insisted he could succeed where so many others had failed in making England a force again in world football, has lost his job in the aftermath of an undercover newspaper investigation.

Allardyce, who was appointed England manager 67 days ago after the national side’s Euro 2016 humiliation, had described the role as his dream job.

But the former Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United manager now finds himself hugely embarrassed after his departure was announced on Tuesday night, despite leaving with a 100% record following an unconvincing 1-0 victory against Slovakia in his only international match in charge.

Allardyce’s future was thrown into doubt on Monday night when the Telegraph published the results of an undercover investigation that showed him negotiating a fee of £400,000 to represent an overseas firm that was hoping to profit from Premier League transfers, before he had even named his first squad.

A dramatic day began with the FA chief executive, Martin Glenn, and the newly appointed chairman, Greg Clarke, arriving at Wembley for a series of crisis meetings, as Allardyce set off for Wembley from his Bolton home. It ended with news filtering out to the media crews huddled outside that a “deeply disappointed” Allardyce had agreed to quit by “mutual consent”.

Eight Years After, EFCC Re-Arraigns Kalu, Two Others

About eight years after the case was stalled, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) today recommenced the trial of former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu and two others.

Kalu, his ex-aide, Jones Udeogo, and the ex-governor’s company, Slok Nigeria Limited, were re-arraigned on a 34-count charge before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Before the arraignment, Kalu and others had argued against the proceedings and urged the court to await the pending appeal by Slok before the Supreme Court.

Trial judge, Justice Anwuri Chikere, rejected the defendants’ objection to their arraignment and ordered that the charge be read out to them.

In the amended charge, Kalu and others were accused of diverting about N3.2billion from the Abia State Government’s treasury during his (Kalu) tenure as Abia State governor.

They pleaded not guilty when the charges were read out to them, following which the court granted them bail on the terms attached to the one granted them in April 2008 by Justice Adamu Bello (now retired).

The court adjourned to December 6 for the commencement of trial.

They were arraigned before Justice A. Umar of the FCT High Court in Maitama, Abuja on a 4-count charge of criminal conspiracy.

They were docked alongside Habour Bay International Limited.

The former senior naval officers are accused of buying a house worth N600 million from the account of Naval Engineering Services. The purchase was not captured in the budget.

Instead, the documentation of transfer of ownership of the property was done such that a private
company owned by Mr. Jibrin’s family became the buyer.

The defendants pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them.

In view of their plea, counsel to EFCC, Abdullah Faruk, asked the court for a date for commencement of trial.

Preacher Who Told Woman She Would "Burn In Hell" For Wearing Skinny Jeans Begs In Court + All The Other Funny Things He Said

When the reality of jail sets in, lol. Sheybi he was bragging on the street before, telling a woman going on her own that she would burn in hell for wearing skinny jeans, lool.

So a street preacher who told a Muslim woman she would "burn in hell" for wearing skinny jeans has walked free from court after VOWING TO KEEP HIS RELIGIOUS VIEWS TO HIMSELF.

Krissoni Henderson also called his victim a non-believer and a prostitute before branding police "disgusting" atheists - but he persuaded magistrates today he was a changed man.

Instead of prison he was sentenced to a 24-month community order with a curfew - and ordered to complete an anger management course.

Henderson, 31, was arrested in July after former social worker Noor Alneaimi made a complaint to West Midlands Police.

He was convicted on Monday of religiously aggravated threatening behaviour following a trial at Birmingham Magistrates' Court.

Speaking in court immediately after sentencing, Henderson, who the court was told suffered with bipolar disorder, said: "I am completely innocent."

The married father of one added: "I am going to turn my life around.

"I'm going to be a good father and a good husband."

Chairman of the magistrates' bench Michael Somers, who sentenced Henderson, responded: "Glad to hear it."

Outside, wearing a hooded white robe and trainers, he told reporters his preaching days were over.

He then said: "My skin is as thick as a crocodile, my skin is as thick as a rhinoceros."

Henderson added: "This is just my exterior. Come and live with me for 24 hours and you will know what sort of person I am; I will wash your feet, and I will cook your food, and I will comb your hair and I will make you a cup of tea.

"That's the sort of person I am."

Earlier during sentencing, his lawyer Peter Ricketts told the court: "He is adamant he's stopped preaching.

"He has strong views about religion but he's going to have to keep them to himself, and his family."

Henderson was also told he must complete a course on decision-making and abide by a night-time curfew.

He was ordered to pay £200 compensation to his victim, £425 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

Nigerian Couple Who Lure Girls To Libya For Prostitution And Made One Of Them Contact AIDS Are Jailed

Justice Joyce Abdulmaleek of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, on Tuesday sentenced a couple to 14 years imprisonment without an option of fine, for human trafficking.

Abdulmaleek convicted Idowu Folorunso, 37, and his wife, Titilayo, and sentenced them to seven years imprisonment each.

She said the prosecution provided overwhelming oral, documentary and other substantial evidence against the couple.

“Therefore, Idowu and Titilayo are sentenced to seven years imprisonment each for count one, and seven years imprisonment for count two, without any option of fine and with hard labour. The sentences are, however, to run concurrently,” the judge said.

The judge held that Idowu and Titilayo lied to Bidemi Adeshina that there were teaching opportunities for girls in Libya and that she should utilise them since she had National Certificate of Education.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the couple wept as they prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.

NAN reports that Idowu and Titilayo were arraigned on a two-count charge of unlawful procurement of person and organising foreign trip for the purpose of prostitution.

The Folorunsos committed the crime on May 20, 2014, at Odo-Oba Elere, Ibadan, according to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other Related Matters (NAPTIP).
In her evidence earlier, Adeshina said that Idowu and Titilayo lured her into prostitution in Libya where she became infected with HIV/AIDS.

Adeshina testified that the couple told her that three other girls would be joining her for the teaching job in Libya.

She said that she travelled from Ibadan through Kano, to Niger to Libya and found herself in a
“prostitution joint’’.

The witness said within eight months, the Folorunsos made her to abort four pregnancies.

She added that she contracted HIV/AIDS.

She also said that the couple did not give her anything from the proceeds of her prostitution.

Wife Who Helped Man Fake His Death Reveals How They Deceived The World After Release From Prison

The woman who helped her ex husband fake his own death says that lying to her two sons about their father was "the cruellest possible deception".

Anne Darwin went along with John Darwin 's outrageous scheme to fake his own death to claim the insurance in 2002, but the pair were both convicted of fraud in 2008.

In her book, serialised in the Daily Mail , she writes: "As the world now knows, my husband and I had inflicted the cruellest possible deception on those we loved by pretending he had drowned so we could claim the insurance money to pay off our debts.

"How could any mother sink so low? It is a question I ask myself daily.

"God knows what the boys would have thought of me had they known that their dad was alive and well inside the family home just a few yards behind us — possibly even watching from a window, for all I knew.

"I live with the shame of it every moment of my life."

In the tell-all book about the scheme, Anne reveals how John pushed the canoe out to sea to look as though it had capsized.

She then transported him to Durham railway station and reported him missing to the police.

After a while, John returned to the family home in Hartlepool and lived in a secret room attached to the house.

She says: “We kept this problem hidden from everyone, including our sons, but it was at the forefront of my mind all the time.”

Woman who joined her then hysband to deceive the wotld he was dead tells it all after her release from prison

Anne even went to the beach where John 'disappeared' and threw a floral wreath into the sea with her two children.

Since being released from prison, Anne has rekindled her relationship with her two children but has nothing to do with John.

In January this year the canoe conman was found living with his new wife in a cramped room in Manila on £138 a week.

The infamous fraudster’s new life is a far cry from the one he dreamed of after pretending to die at sea 14 years ago and fleeing to Panama.

Couple Bathed With Acid While Making Love In Kano

Lovemaking turned sorrow for a Kano couple after an unidentified person poured acid on them during sexual intercourse.  According to sources, the incident occurred penultimate week at the couple’s house in the Gyadi Gyadi /Karkasara area of Kano.

It was gathered that the unidentified perpetrator fled before neighbours responded to the couple’s distress call.

Although the husband has since been admitted in an undisclosed hospital, it was gathered that the wife, Amina Moses, was the worst hit. Amina, according to a source, was first admitted in Aminu Kano Specialist Hospital, where she spent some days and was treated.

One of the eyewitnesses who asked not be named said that the closeness of the couple’s bed to the window of their apartment made it easy for their assailant to carry out the dastardly act.

She said: “Amina and her husband called Moses were making love in the evening of the unfortunate day, when they suddenly raised the alarm that someone had poured a liquid substance on them through their window.

“We rushed into their room only to find them in pains. Amina was the one that was badly hit by the liquid substance suspected to be acid. She was treated at the Aminu Kano Specialist Hospital and their assailant has not been apprehended as we speak despite the fact that the matter was reported to the state police command.

“The closeness of their bed to the window made it easy for their attacker to successfully carry out his mission and escape without being apprehended.”

EFCC Arrests Own Official For Collecting N15m Bribe From Lawmaker

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday said it had arrested one of its operatives, Uzodinma Kingsley Agbazue, over alleged N15 million bribe.

The Commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja.

Uwujaren noted that the arrest was in line with EFCC’s determination to flush out corrupt operatives aimed at upholding its integrity.

He stated that “in furtherance of its avowed commitment to uphold the integrity of its officers, EFCC has arrested one of its operatives.

“Uzodinma Kingsley Agbazue was arrested for offences bordering on criminal conspiracy and extortion.’’

According to Uwujaren, the suspect, who is until his arrest a Deputy Detective Superintendent (DSS), collected N15 million from a lawmaker who is under investigation by the commission.

He noted that “Agbazue was arrested following a complaint by a lawmaker currently under investigation by the commission, alleging that the operative collected N15 million from him and promised to give him (the lawmaker) soft landing.”

He added that the lawmaker had told the commission that the defendant could not deliver on his promise as he could not get the bidding of the investigating officer.

“Following the approach, the sum of N15 million was given to Agbazue, whose game plan collapsed after the investigating officer, who was ignorant of his scheme, refused to do his bidding.

“And with the investigation gathering increased momentum after parting with the hefty sum, the complainant became uncomfortable and demanded for refund.

“The complainant stated that when he requested for the refund of his money, Agbazue only returned N5 million, claiming that the balance of N10 million had been given to someone “to kill the case from the top.”
